Research Interest

Involved in the management of pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera in Pigeonpea. For this, both transgenic and non-transgenic approaches are being carried out. The transgenic approach for the mitigation of this insect pest is by using different insecticidal proteins (ICPs) from Bacillus thuringiensis using the tissue culture-independent in planta transformation strategy. The core of this programme has been the meristem-based in planta transformation strategy developed by me. The pigeonpea transformants have been identified by various molecular analysis as well as their bioefficacy against the pod borer under both laboratory and nethouse conditions. Selected promising transgenic events will be assessed under field conditions.

The non-transgenic approach to tackle pod borer has been through the expoitation of pigeonpea wild relatives that are resistant to the herbivore. Deciphering of molecular mechanisms to understand the underlying resistance response is underway. For this various omics approaches are being used for the identification of insect resistance genes that could be deployed for the management of pod borer.
